Field Trip: Sauvie Island

Last weekend we took an outing that I was looking forward to for months in advance: picking flowers and berries on Sauvie Island! Specifically, I knew I wanted lavender and blueberries. What I didn't know was how many hours I would spend wandering through a flower farm fields! It was a feast for all the senses...

Our first stop was the Sauvie Island Lavender Farm, where I picked bundles of lavender while D. picked a basket of mulberries. There were lots of happy bees and we also came away with lavender honey!

Neighboring the lavender farm is Sauvie Island Farms, where they offer many different kinds of U-pick fruits, vegetables, and flowers!

Our focus here was blueberries, but I couldn't resist bringing home a couple bouquets. And spent about an hour wandering through the flower fields. The dahlia hill was magical.

This is what 11 1/2 pounds of blueberries looks like! :)

Each farm offered the tools required for picking: pruners, bands for flowers, and containers. I did opt to bring a bucket for water to keep lavender fresh while we picked blueberries. Note that most of the Sauvie Island Farms flowers are sold per bloom and not per stem.

Field Trip: Old House Dahlias

Old House Dahlias dahlia fest was a perfect way to say goodbye to Summer. We drove to Southeast Portland, and found our way into the garden by hand painted signs, a green tractor, and small red barn. Wandering through rows of over 200 varieties to discover blooms I've never seen before was blissful. I loved the dark foliage of new-to-me Japanese Bishop and one of my old favorites, Sherwood's Peach

I'm already looking forward to next year's Fest and highly recommend purchasing tubers from Old House Dahlias. They're also open for cut flowers for weddings and events until the first frost.

Field Trip: Road Trip Signs

I'm back from my road trip and have a handful of images to share of typography I found along the way. The Goodhand theater in Kimball, Nebraska was my favorite...

Field Trip: Spring in Berkeley

I love Spring in Berkeley. I love the cool mornings with fog that melts into sunshine around 11am. I love spying bird nests in creative spaces. I love the moody sunsets before the fog rolls back across the bay. I love all the gardens. And in this climate,

so

many things grow...

These photos are from a recent trip to the

UC Botanical Garden

, where plants are divided by region. There's a lovely herb and vegetable section, an arid cactus greenhouse, and (my favorite) the lush Japanese garden.

There are so many acres to explore!
